Grows up to 1,5 meters length in exceptional cases, commonly encoutered eels are 60-80 centimeters long. Males are smaller than females.

Found in almost all types of inland water bodies, except for upper courses of mountain streams. Often found buried in the muddy bottom or hiding under natural obstacles.

Feeds on small fish, also dead, small crayfish and invertebrates.

Young eels have yellow-whiteish belly and sides, older ones have silvery sides and white belly. Back is
